UWI, Cave Hill launches new faculty
An eighth faculty has been introduced to the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus- the Faculty of Culture, Creative and Performing Arts.
The faculty was officially launched on August 1, 2020 as Barbados celebrated Emancipation Day under the theme “Creating New Freedoms – Crafting New Futures”.
Prior to the launch, Principal of the UWI, Professor the Most Honourable V. Eudine Barritea stated that the programmes on offer will allow Caribbean people to understand and appreciate their history and culture more.
“The faculty of Culture, Creative and Performing Arts begins with what Rex Nettleford called the organic relationship between cultural identity and artistic relation”.
She said she wants this faculty to provide future students who want to make a living from the performing arts to have the necessary training to do so. Professor Barriteau said the “orange economy” has employment opportunities and she wants for Caribbean people to take advantage of this.
Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Mottley also delivered remarks at the virtual launch. She said she is pleased to know that Barbadians have the necessary means to express themselves freely.
She made mention of the fact that in previous years, there were ongoing debates as to whether there should be Emancipation Day lectures or a statue erected to honour Bussa. Today, she noted, the country has made significant progress in this regard.
PM Mottley said the launch of the faculty is a memorable occasion as it provides Caribbean people with the opportunity to express themselves through their culture and also noted it was launched on the day that Caribbean people took their first steps to freedom.
